Beginner’s Guide to Freqtrade: Backtesting, Dry Runs & How to Choose a Strategy That Works

Freqtrade is a free, open-source Python-based trading bot for cryptocurrency markets. It allows you to build, backtest, optimize, and automate your own algorithmic trading strategies. Config files play a central role: one for backtesting (static pairlist) and another for live/dry runs (dynamic pairlist with filters) can produce more reliable testing and real-market results.

Here’s a simple checklist:

Look for strategies that show screenshots or reports of backtests, bias checks, and dry run signals before you buy.

Ensure the strategy uses:

• Backtests without lookahead bias corrections

• Long-term data across market conditions

• Forward testing (dry run results)

A strategy shouldn’t be hard-coded. You want something where you can tweak:

• Filters

• Risk parameters

• Pairlists

• Timeframes

This flexibility helps you adapt as markets evolve.

Algorithmic trading can be powerful, but proof matters. Before running live capital:

• Backtest the strategy with bias-controlled configs

• Run dry tests to see real signal behavior

• Review performance visually and numerically

• Adjust parameters based on risk tolerance
